What is the difference between Steam and Ultrasonic Humidifiers?

Ultrasonic humidifiers employ high frequency vibrations that vibrate water so fast that it makes the water become airborne. Once airborne, the water disperses and evaporates to become humidity. Along with water, minerals as well become airborne and can settle out as white dust on furniture unless a demineralization cartridge is used. These units perform quietly (and therefore great in a bedroom) as the high frequency vibrations are nearly silent.

A steam humidifier relies on high internal heat to evaporate water. Essentially, water is boiled and turns into steam and in doing so, microbials such as bacteria and viruses are destroyed. White dust from minerals are left behind in the steam humidifier instead of them falling out on your furniture. Steam humidifiers do create some noise from the water boiling. Modern units like the Air-O-Swiss S450 are much more quiet than other brands or older units.

Purahome advises our customers that the optimal humidity range for their home or work is between 40% and 55%. This is the optimal humidity range where allergens and microbials are minimized.

How does the Air-O-Swiss U700 Ultrasonic Humidifier work?

Your Air-O-Swiss U700 Ultrasonic Humidifier is a powerful, portable humidifier that provides hygienic humidity with these features:

1. Ultrasonic Humidification with Warm or Cool Mist - The Air-O-Swiss U700 is an ultrasonic humidifier. This means that it uses high-frequency vibrations to turn your water into a micro-fine mist. You will see the micro-fine mist blow out of the U700 Ultrasonic Humidifier and immediately evaporate in your room (where it can no longer be seen and is now humidity). Many of our customers like this because it offers them peace of mind at a glance that the system is in operation.

What is The Difference Between Warm and Cool Mist Humidifiers?

An ultrasonic humidifier creates a water mist from the high frequency vibrations. If the water mist is preheated (to around 35°C), it is then called a warm mist humidifier. When it is not, it is a cool mist humidifier.

Cool mist humidifiers are better suited for allergy relief. They will also make a room feel  more cool. When the cool mist is evaporated into humidity, this process uses energy from your living space to do so and may create a “cool” sensation. Warm mist humidifiers are better suited for asthma relief and respiratory infections. As the water is preheated, the water evaporates more easily in to your air thereby requiring less energy. This creates the sensation of “warmth”. Your Air-O-Swiss U700 gives you the best of both worlds.

2. Controlling Humidity with Digital Controls - You can simply choose a desired output if you wish to humidify from low (recommended for night operation) to medium (normal operation) to high output. The output symbol on the display shows which of the three levels has been selected.

You can choose the humidity you desire in Auto Mode and humidification is controlled automatically. The Air-O-Swiss U700 saves the last–used settings when it is switched off, another nice feature not found in most humidifiers.

3. Integrated Hygrostat - Unlike many ultrasonic humidifiers, the Air-O-Swiss U700 measures humidity in 1% increments. This results in more accurate room measurements and improved comfort in your home.  

4. Descaling Cleaning Function - Your Air-O-Swiss U700 is equipped with a descaling function. All that is needed is a package of EZCal (one is included). During descaling, the humidifier runs for 5 seconds and then pauses for 10 minutes. This process repeats itself until the time you set for the descaling expires. A brush is also included to help clean the ultrasonic membrane.

5. HydroCell - The Hydro Cell offers silver plus technology to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. It also dechlorinates the water for healthier humidity and family. 6. Demineralizer cartridge - A replaceable demineralizer cartridge ensures water mist with reduced scale or mineral residues for less dust on furniture. If hard water is being used to fill the humidifier, the Demineralizing Cartridge should work well for 2 to 3 months. Emergence of white dust indicates the cartridge needs to be changed or refilled.

What is that white dust?

If you fill your humidifier with soft water, you will see white dust at some point due to the increase in salt content of your water/humidity. This is because of the added sodium in your water (which has replaced calcium and magnesium). Note: The Demineralizing Cartridge in the  Air-O-Swiss U700 can only reduce calcium and magnesium, the two elements responsible for scale formation. 

*Using reverse osmosis or distilled water (water WITHOUT minerals) will help reduce the formation of white dust. As this water is aggressive (acidic) in nature, it can cause the membrane to oxidize prematurely over time.

Warranty

We are proud to cover these humidifiers in Canada for a full 3 years against defects in parts and labour. Most ultrasonic humidifiers carry a 1 year warranty only. Accessories, as consumables, are exempt from this warranty.

Why do I keep getting lots of white dust on my floors and furniture?

If you are running an ultrasonic humidifier, without a demineralizing cartridge, the minerals that are sent out of the humidifier with the water vapour will appear as white dust.  If you are using a demineralizing cartridge, it is quite likely that it is fully saturated and no longer affective.  If the ultrasonic humidifier is being used where there is no air flow (radiant heat), there is a greater likelihood of seeing the white dust.

There is slime in my humidifier. What is it and is it harmful?

If you notice that there is a layer of slime at the bottom of your humidifier, this means that there is a biofilm caused by bacterial growth.  The unit should be cleaned with mild soap and water, and also sanitized with hydrogen peroxide, or a natural disinfectant, such as Benefect.

How do I clean my humidifier?

Whenever water evaporates, minerals will accumulate.  To descale the humidifier, use an acidic solution, such as vinegar, or EZ-Cal, and let the unit soak for 30 minutes.  Clean with a stiff brush and then rinse with water.

How do I reset the Air-O-Swiss ‘clean’ reminder light?

Start the descaling process by holding the power/clean button down for 3 seconds until the length of time for descaling appears.  Simply choose the length of time, or, if you do not wish to descale, choose 0 hrs, and the clean reminder light will disappear.
