Overview

How do you choose between an HRV and ERV System?

In general, Purahome believes (Greentek believes this also), if you use a heating system more often than air conditioning, choose anGreentek Professional Series Flow Through Diagram HRV. If you use an AC more than heating, choose an ERV. To make these general statements more specific, Purahome offers this further advice:

  • For a relatively smaller, tight house in a cold climate — especially a house with a large family (more water usage), choose an HRV.

  • For a relatively larger house in a cold climate — especially a house with few occupants — choose an ERV.

  • In a hot, humid, climate, choose an ERV as it will keep the moisture to the outside and will cost a little less overall to operate during the summer.

  • In mixed climates, choose either ventilator based on:

- family size (the more people, the higher the moisture level ie tend towards an HRV), and

- age of home (the older the home, the more ventilated it is and the less moisture in the home ie. tend towards an ERV).

Purahome balances all ERVs and HRVs we install with this special deviceYour Installation Needs To Be Balanced!

According to the CMHC in Canada, approximately 90% of installed ventilators are not balanced or maintained! Purahome has to agree with this finding. We have been into many homes with an existing ventilator to provide healthier air and when we discuss it with the homeowner, they often do not know how it works or how to maintain it.  Purahome customers are educated on their ventilators and know what information to provide us if they wish to adjust any user settings. They are also called annually for their replacement filter kits that include our GREEN Benefect Disinfectant Cleaner.

Technology

How does the Greentek Professional Series 7.15 Energy Recovery Ventilator work?

Greentek ERV and HRV Installation Diagram

Greentek ventilators were designed to overcome the engineering shortcomings of all other ventilators (and their installation issues). The ERV door opens upward for much easier access to the inside. There is no obstruction around the drain pan for much easier cleaning. The drain pan is also sloped to eliminate bacteria-producing stagnant water. The electronic controls are simple for easy operation. The “ISF” (Insert, Slide and Fix) collar system and the “SPM” (Single Person Mount) attachment system all make Greentek ERVs easier and quicker to install than competitive ventilator brands.

The revolutionary ERV technology is superior to paper-based cores, and includes an advanced polymer membrane with Microban and is water washable.

Greentek Push Through Design

Push Through Design

Conventional ERVs have their fan/motors blowing air out of their ports which increases sound levels. Greentek ERVs employ “push through” design whereby each motor/fan PULLS air in from the ports and pushes it through the heat recovery core instead of out a port so that the core acts as a sound dampener. This makes Greentek ERVs very silent in operation.

Greentek High Performance Engineered Motor

German-Engineered Motors

All Greentek ERVs are designed with high performance and reliable German-engineered fan/motors. Factory sealed and dynamically balanced, these motors are maintenance free for many years. The backward inclined motor blades offer a high air flow efficiency. The fan/motors are also permanently lubricated and have a very low energy consumption – 65 watts maximum (like a light bulb). Purahome really likes how Greentek has used voltage variation for the speed control of both fan motors in order to balance the ERV system.

Greentek DuoTrol Balancing System

DuoTrol Balancing

Every ERV installation requires balancing the system meaning air flow coming into your home and air being exhausted from your home are within 10% of one another. With every Greentek ERV, air flow gets balanced by simply adjusting the fan/motor speed for intake and exhaust and not by using mechanical dampers. This makes every Greentek ERV installation more silent and economical. By reducing motor speed to balance the unit you are reducing the noise that would be produced by balancing dampers. In addition, with this exclusive GREEN technology the Greentek ERV will consume less energy than comparable sized ERVs.

Greentek ISF Revolutionary Collar System makes it a quick and simple installation!

ISF Collar System

ISF stands for “Insert, Slide and Fix”. Our installers love this revolutionary collar system and yours will too. This exclusive Greentek collar system enables you to manipulate the duct and secure it 100% airtight with the locking collar (without being on a ladder). The collar then slides into place on the Greentek ERV. This eliminates one of the challenges of installing an ERV -- how to properly secure and seal an insulated duct to a metal or plastic ERV port.

Auxillary Connecting Relay

Unlike any other ERV, the Greentek ERVs feature an interlock relay that gives you the option to run the Greentek ERV only when the furnace fan is running. To do this with other ERVs requires extra money in additional parts and labour -- it is already included in the Greentek ERV for less money!

Proportional DefrostGreentek Proportional Defrost saves energy!

When the ERV needs to defrost the core, the amount of energy used is relative to the outside temperature – this is an exclusive Greentek GREEN feature! Other ERVs will defrost their cores with a maximum use of energy to ensure a complete defrost. In contrast, Greentek essentially increases the motor speed only when outdoor temperatures drop to provide increased defrost capacity. This means that on days that are not as cold (say -5° C) the defrost mode will function at low speed (unlike other ERVs!). This unique GREEN Greentek technology reduces energy usage by eliminating unnecessary defrost during milder days and offers a more silent operation.

Best Performance and Warranty

As is the case with any whole home air equipment installation, best results are achieved with the furnace fan running, especially when a family member has a greater need for improved air quality. It is the customer’s choice whether to run the furnace fan 100% of the time or not. Although hydro costs will go up air quality will be better (a fair trade). With this in mind, only Greentek ERVs include a built-in Interlock Relay that shuts the ERV off when the furnace fan is not running.

As far as Purahome can tell, Imperial Air Technologies is the only manufacturer that offers a complete range of products AND installation materials designed to improve indoor air quality while providing a full selection of accessories that facilitate installation.  After many diverse installations, our testing revealed:

  • Electronic balancing of fan speeds (fresh air in and stale air out) results in very quiet, smooth ventilation

  • every installation to date has significantly improved our customers’ air quality

  • customers were getting exciting results in real-time, real-world testing situations at work and at home

 10 Year Warranty

10 Year Warranty

10 years limited warranty (5 years 100% and 5 more years pro-rated) on the fan motors, 5 years warranty on the ERV Core and 5 years warranty on all other components.

Customer Reviews

I really appreciate the easy to use controller with my Greentek Series HRV. I also like that the HRV only needs my attention twice a year. Its so simple -- I clean the core by simply pulling it out and rinsing it in the laundry tub every 6 months and then using the Microgerme sanitizer. I believe it keeps my air and my family healthier in our new home. - N. Pershad

FAQs

How do I set my dehumidistat (controller)?

We know that if a home is too humid (i.e.: above 60% relative humidity), moulds and other funguses will grow. We also know that if a home is too dry (i.e.: below 35%), viruses thrive. So ideally, the humidity level of a home should sit around 40-45% for maximum benefit and comfort. If you have a ventilator and a whole home humidifier, it is highly recommended that the humidifier be set 5-10% lower than the ventilator. This will ensure that your systems are working cohesively with one another.

There’s no water in my drain tube, is this normal?

The reason water drains from your HRV is because of moisture that builds up condensation from warm air touching the colder surfaces inside.  The drain is there to release that condensate water.  So, when there isn’t a moisture build up inside, there won’t be water inside your drain tube.  Moisture in the tube is also a result of lifestyle (cooking, bathing, etc.).

My house is too dry, what do I do?

One thing Purahome informs all of their customers of when showing interest in purchasing a ventilator is that they may also need a humidifier down the road. Ventilators do an exceptional job at reducing your exposure to harmful VOCs and other gases, in the winter. However, when taking in the dry winter air from outside, they can reduce the moisture content of your air. So if you would like to continue to benefit from your ventilator during the winter months, it would be best to invest in a humidifier.

I still have an inch of water on my windows. Is this a concern for mould growth?

No.  Water presence on the windows depends on a few factors, such as, how air tight your home is, the quality of windows, humidification, and ventilation.  If you do see any black growth, you can wipe it up with mild soap and water, or, use a safe disinfectant like Benefect.

What is the maintenance on my HRV/ERV? How do I clean my HRV/ERV core?

Every year, your HRV/ERV will require a new filter kit, which includes two prefilters and a bottle of Benefect Disinfectant. At the six month mark, your prefilters will need to be cleaned. This can be done by vacuum or hosing off the debris and spraying them with the Benefect Disinfectant.

Your HRV/ERV core will need to be taken cleaned once every 6 months. You do this by sliding the core out of its track and rinsing it under water. Before putting it back in its track, wait for the core to dry. We also recommend wiping the inside of your HRV/ERV with a natural disinfectant spray.

My HRV is not running. Is a service needed?

Check the power cord is not loose on top of the HRV. Then check the Controller and Duotrol settings. Set the controller to a low humidity setting. The Intermittent setting will shut down the HRV when the desired humidity in your home is reached whereas the Continuous setting will keep the HRV running at a lower speed. Other reasons why the unit is not running could be the door switch, this can be tested by simply pressing down on it and the HRV should run.

One of the motors isn’t running. Is it broken?

If one of the motors stops running, your unit has most likely entered a defrost cycle. Your Greentek Ventilator will enter an automatic defrost cycle when temperatures outside reach -5 ⁰C or below. This means that the motor drawing cold, outdoor air in through the core shuts off for 3-5 minutes every 20 minutes allowing any ice built-up in the core to melt. Greentek ventilators use proportional defrost cycles, so the colder it is outside, the longer the motor stays shut off.
