Just recently in December of 2006, Nova Scotia health officials issued a warning to take shorter baths and showers to 9 municipalities near Halifax after they tested and found that trihalomethanes (THMs) were absorbed from showering.

Not Everything Is Created Equal

Purahome has found many shower filters on the market contain loosely packed filtration media inside. Just shake it and you will hear it. Your Deluxe-5 is higher quality with packed-in media. Just holding the filter in your hand will let you know the filter is tightly packed. This means the filter is less likely to channel and let untreated water through.
The Proof:
Testing Data shows a high of 99% chlorine removal (most shower filters don't reach this level of proficiency) when new and 87% removal after 10 000 g of water at 2 ppm chlorine have passed through. This represents an approximate efficiency of 93% chlorine removal over the life of the filter. The more often your filter gets replaced, the better your protection against chlorine exposure.

How the Deluxe-5 Works

Your Deluxe-5 uses a proprietary blend of KDF Media to reduce chlorine into a soluble chloride salt. Unlike carbon which adsorbs chlorine less efficiently in hot water, KDF performs better in hot water. (Here we go again with our Presidents favourite – chemistry!) When salt and water make a car rust in the winter time in Canada, it is called a redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction where iron in your car gets oxidized (loses electrons). In your shower, KDF (a copper-zinc mixture) undergoes a redox reaction with chlorine gas where the chlorine gas gets reduced (picks up electrons from Zinc) to turn into chloride, a harmless dissolved salt in your water.

Purahome has seen retailers advertising VOC removal from a shower filter, we advise caution and would disagree. We do not know of any research that shows otherwise. A properly designed shower filter works great on chlorine removal but not on VOCs. What we are not excited about:

• As is the case with any Dechlorinating Shower Filter, it is not designed to fill up your bath tub (it will – but you will have 3x the normal wait). There are easier ways to get a healthier bath (our Whole Home systems or the Crystal Ball).

Good Advice:

Run your Deluxe-5 for a minute or less when it is installed brand new. This will eliminate any media fines that have settled during shipping. Also use several wraps of teflon tape. Purahome likes 8 wraps or so and go in the clockwise direction when facing the threads (a plumbing trick). In doing so, the head usually does not have to be as tightly installed to prevent leaks. This results in an easier-to-move shower head and less stress on the housing.
