Just recently in December of 2006, Nova Scotia health officials issued a warning to take shorter baths and showers to 9 municipalities near Halifax after they tested and found that trihalomethanes (THMs) were absorbed from showering.

What does Dr. Martin Fox, Author of “Healthy Water For A Longer Life” say about Chlorination?

Dr. Fox was the first person to write a book using world-wide collaborative research on the effects contaminants and different water types can have on people’s health. After summarizing several research articles on the toxic effects of chlorine, Dr. Fox concludes:

How Your Aquaspace SF100 Works

1. Your Aquaspace SF 100 uses a KDF Media to reduce chlorine into a soluble chloride salt. Unlike carbon which adsorbs chlorine less efficiently in hot water, KDF performs better in hot water. (Here we go again with our Presidents favourite – chemistry!) When salt and water make a car rust in the winter time in Canada, it is called a redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction where iron in your car gets oxidized (loses electrons). In your shower, KDF (a copper-zinc mixture) undergoes a redox reaction with chlorine gas where the chlorine gas gets reduced (picks up electrons from Zinc) to turn into chloride, a harmless dissolved salt in your water.

   Purahome has seen water filters that are made with several layers of different filtration media. We even saw one with seven layers crammed into less than 10 inches of space! The idea here is to make the water filter capable of treating a broader spectrum of contaminants. It sounds great but unfortunately this concept does not work. If it did, NASA would not have spent millions of dollars in research and time to find a superior treatment alternative and Aquaspace would not be needed. When using multiple media combined in one filter, each media has less contact time with the water and can more quickly or entirely lose it’s ability to filter what it is designed to filter. Good Advice:
Run your Aquaspace SF100 for a minute or less when it is installed brand new. This will eliminate any media fines that have settled during shipping. Also use several wraps of teflon tape. Purahome likes 8 wraps or so and go in the clockwise direction when facing the threads (a plumbing trick). In doing so, the system usually does not have to be as tightly installed to prevent leaks.
