Purahome President Mario Di Franco is a Chemist whose university thesis was on how to analyze certain carcinogens in water. Mario’s research brought with it the realization that Canada needed sensible and effective water treatment for not just chlorine (a major carcinogen, yet easy to remove) but for the more challenging to remove organic and inorganic contaminants in water that existing technologies simply could not treat. This laid the foundation for developing Purahome. As we now enter our 10th Year in business (we are very proud of that!) we are proud to acknowledge that the very first technology we offered was Aquaspace Water Treatment technology. The Fluoride and Nitrate Options

If your water has fluoride added to it (your regional treatment provider can let you know) you can have the best of both worlds – fluoride removal with patented hi-tech Aquaspace filtration for the healthiest possible water. After the Exxon Valdez environmental disaster off the Alaskan coastline, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was conducting tests with different technologies to find how to best clean up the organic contaminants resulting from the oil spill. The World Health Organization (WHO) Symposium held in December 2006 focused on over 80 studies from all over the world dating from 1957 to 2003. The Symposium linked a lack of calcium and magnesium in water with increased cardiovascular disease, similar to what Dr. Fox stated about 20 years earlier!

Aquaspace Compared To The Competition

There are really only a few water treatment options for your drinking water and they are each a compromise. Option A: simple carbon filters reduce odours, improve taste but are ineffective in broad spectrum contaminant removal. Option B: Reverse Osmosis and Distillers remove almost everything in your water including beneficial minerals resulting in lower pH (water that is more acidic) and our testing shows most people find it poorer tasting. Contaminants - Why Isn’t More Being Done?

Why doesn’t our Canadian government eliminate all of these harmful substances?
Purahome believes there are several reasons. First, although most Canadian municipalities have microbiologically safe water, we believe it is not as safe in regard to  chemical contaminants. To treat the entire water supply to such a high standard is not practical financially and technologically when you consider less than half of 1% of all water is used for ingestion. Second, many Canadian distribution systems are aging and in need of repair. Municipalities lose up to 40% of their treated water before it even reaches intended homeowners so if water is escaping the piping, then contaminants are getting in.

What can the government then do?

Back in the early 1970’s, the Safe Water Drinking Act was introduced. Government now has municipalities monitor contaminants according to MCLs or Maximum Contaminant Levels. For example, the MCL for lead in Ontario is 10 ppb. As a heavy metal, your body (and other animals for that matter) cannot eliminate lead through the liver`s normal function and it then bioaccumulates. This is why you do not eat the fish that eat the fish that eat the smaller fish as bioaccumulation continues down the food chain. With this in mind, Purahome does not want any lead in our water (or bodies!) even if the level of lead is below our MCL. The point is even when a municipality is in compliance with MCLs, your water may not be healthy. As the National Resource Defence Council (NRDC) has researched, ``Still 1 out of 5 Americans are drinking unsafe water.`` We assume the same applies to Canada.

So What Is The Answer? Trust NASA Technology For Great Water

People associate unhealthy water with bad taste and odours when reality is most harmful contaminants are tasteless and odourless such as lead and chloroform. Purahome is trying to advise you to trust good science (such as Aquaspace), rather than your sense of odour and taste.  

For the Apollo Missions, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) required an onboard water recovery system. This was chosen to be the most efficient and space-saving way to use water in space. The reality then is if you flush it, you may have to drink it! In 1986, the U.S. Secret Service was concerned after finding that U.S. President Reagan became ill (and so did his dog) from the White House drinking water. The U.S. Secret Service then tested various water treatment systems. Their research determined Aquaspace was the President's best defense against contaminated water - over 100 systems were installed in the White House in 1986! Aquaspace was also installed in the Child Care Centre at the Headquarters of the EPA in Washington, DC. They had tried several systems to remove lead but tests showed that lead was still in their water. After installing Aquaspace, the lead was finally removed effectively. Purahome can think of no greater testimonials to the effectiveness of Aquaspace Systems.

The Ultimate Test!

Frederick Bernardin, Director of National Testing Laboratories, developed a true Stress Test to determine how good an adsorptive media filter performs.  Instead of exposing a test filter to only one contaminant at a time and then extrapolating these results to predict what other contaminants the media filter will remove, Bernardin's Stress Test involves bombarding the media filter with 48 contaminants, all at the same time. This is a more rigorous test and a better representation of how a media filter will truly perform in municipal water. Purahome calls this real-world testing that better represents municipal water.

When using the Stress Test to evaluate different media filters, a generalization was found. Only a few of the 48 contaminants were likely to be removed to high efficiencies, another few would be removed very well, and the remaining contaminants were removed poorly or not at all. After testing Aquaspace at 10 times the Maximum Contaminant Level amount for each of the 48 contaminants, Bernardin reported to Aquaspace, "I am truly amazed!" Almost all contaminants were removed at levels higher than 97% efficiency!

(Note: At the time of the Stress Test, lead was removed with an 81% efficiency. The Aquaspace formula has since been improved and now lead is removed at 99% efficiency as shown by independent testing at National Testing Laboratories.)

More Testing and Certification 

There are a lot of water filters on the market today, but only a handful (10% of those tested) have passed stringent certification in the state of California. Aquaspace Water Systems have been independently tested by National Testing Laboratories to ANSI standards, and their most popular products have been certified by the state of California and carried the Water Quality Association Gold Seal. Our Carafe filter has been written about in several columns and articles. It was also rated “clearly the best” by CHOICE Magazine, Australia’s Consumer Report Magazine.

Even More Testing……Versus Evian!

Evian Water comes from the French Alps and is known for its great taste. We used Washington D.C. tap water for this challenge as it was one of the municipalities with water reported to contain lead and other toxins. This water was filtered with Aquaspace technology and independent lab tested versus Evian for taste characteristics and purity. The conclusion – the independent lab could not tell the difference! A few differences we do know though and we do not need a lab to tell us: Aquaspace is always fresh, costs about 100X less per litre and is very GREEN compared to Evian (no bottles and no trans-Atlantic shipping)!

Purahome has seen water filters that are made with several layers of different filtration media. We even saw one with seven layers crammed into less than 10 inches of space! The idea here is to make the water filter capable of treating a broader spectrum of contaminants. It sounds great but unfortunately this concept does not work. If it did, NASA would not have spent millions of dollars in research and time to find a superior treatment alternative and Aquaspace would not be needed. When using multiple media combined in one filter, each media has less contact time with the water and can more quickly or entirely lose it’s ability to filter what it is designed to filter. The patented blend of ingredients in Aquaspace are all charge modified (NASA technology) so that each ingredient can filter broader spectrum contaminants with less contact time! That is true technology-based water filtration!

4. Low Maintenance – This is Easy!
Your Aquaspace UC Plus will need your attention approximately only once a year at which time you change the cartridge in literally a few minutes. The Italian-imported housings  we use for the UC Plus make filter changes even easier compared to traditional style housings. As well, unlike an RO or distiller with many components such as tanks and shutoff valves, your UC Plus does not have these parts that at some point will need service and is therefore less costly to maintain.

Good Advice – the day your water system is installed (do-it-yourself or professional) always check for leaks before you go to bed. It is good practice to check the next few days and every so often afterwards as well. Systems can get hit or damaged by other items being stored under the counter.
