Greentek HRV Professional P Series HVI Certified (PH 10.22): Overview

Purahome is very excited to have partnered with Imperial Air Technologies.  We wanted to meet with Imperial Air Technologies because of the Greentek Heat Recovery Ventilators which we saw as offering some unique advanced features that would provide superior performance with every model being HVI Certified. Purahome recommends the P Series (Professional) for most homes and D Series (Deluxe) for homes that require suction from an area with a vaulted ceiling. If limited space is available, the SS (Space-Saving) Series may be the only option. As far as Purahome can tell, Imperial Air Technologies is the only manufacturer that offers a complete range of products and ALSO installation materials designed to improve indoor air quality while providing a full selection of accessories that facilitate installation.  After many diverse installations, our testing revealed:

• Electronic balancing of fan speeds (fresh air in and stale air out) results in very quiet, smooth ventilation
• every single installation to date has significantly improved our customers’ air quality
• customers were getting exciting results in real-time, real-world testing situations at work and home
 

 

Because of a large focus on energy conservation in the early 1980’s, new building codes were implemented in order to reduce energy consumption, The new codes called for higher insulated values. As a result, new homes, buildings, additions and even remodeling projects are being built far more AIRTIGHT than they used to be.

People started complaining of headaches, nausea, fatigue and dizziness in the workplace. By the 1990’s people were experiencing similar symptoms in their own newly built homes. This is when the term “Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)” was developed. 

Improved design that includes better insulation has significantly reduced drafts and energy consumption for heating resulted in building a “tight” home to today's standards with reduced overall heat loss by 25 to 50%. This is great for saving money and energy but downright dangerous for our health! This is why every November is Purahome’s busiest month of the year – an air tight home becomes very apparent when a furnace starts to run. One of the most critical and underestimated aspects of newer buildings and homes is ventilation control.

The ventilation rate of a traditionally older drafty home is determined by a few things. For example, the colder and windier it gets, the better ventilated your home is. In drafty old homes, this process occurs naturally, as untreated air is drawn in. If your home, however, is airtight because it was built within the last 15 years or so, (read this section twice as it is scary), it can take as long as 10 hours for one air exchange!  Compare this to a recommended ventilation of one air exchange every three hours  or so to alleviate “Sick Building Syndrome”. Oxygen consumed is not being replaced and VOC gases accumulate in your indoor space.

For people who want the cleanest air as free from gases, odours and humidity (in the winter) as possible, we highly recommend the Greentek PH (Professional) Heat Recovery Ventilation Series.  Individuals sensitized to airborne gases such as formaldehyde, benzene and other VOCs that off-gas will drastically reduce indoor exposure to these gases by using a Greentek HRV sized by Purahome for your help.

Did You Know?

According to the CMHC in Canada, approximately 90% of installed HRVs are not balanced and not maintained! Purahome has to agree with this finding. We have been into many homes with an existing HRV to provide healthier air and when we quiz the homeowner about it, they do not typically know how it works and what to do for maintenance.  Purahome customers are educated on their HRVs, know what information to provide us if they wish to slightly adjust any user settings and are called annually for their replacement filter kits that include our GREEN Microgerme Sanitizing Cleaner.

With every Greentek HRV, air flow gets balanced by simply adjusting the fan/motor speed for intake and exhaust and not by using mechanical dampers. This makes every Greentek HRV installation more silent and economical. By reducing motor speed to balance the unit you are reducing the noise that would be produced by balancing dampers. In addition, with this exclusive GREEN technology the Greentek HRV will consume less energy than comparable sized HRVs.

Every “GreenThinker” Dehumidistat Control has features to make your Greentek HRV easy to operate. The RD-1 Model requires 2-wire installation because it works on humidity detection only. All other Models require 4-wire installation as they offer more controls than just humidity.

3. Low Maintenance & “No Tools” Filter Changes– This is Easy!

Your Greentek Series HRVs will need your attention only twice a year! It is maintenance-free for up to six months at which time (NO TOOLS REQUIRED) you clean the heat recovery core by simply pulling it out and rinsing it in the laundry tub. Only Purahome offers annual filter kits for Greentek HRVs that include our Microgerme Sanitizing GREEN cleaner to help sanitize your core. The GREEN Coconut-fibre filter pads last long and get changed annually. They are also biodegradeable.

4. “Push Through Design” – WOW, It’s Really, Really Quiet!
 

Conventional HRVs have their fan/motors blowing air out of their ports which increases sound levels. Greentek HRVs employ “Push Through” Design whereby each motor/fan PULLS air in from the ports and pushes it through the heat recovery core instead of out a port so that the core acts as a sound dampener. This makes Greentek HRVs very silent in operation.

All Greentek HRVs are designed with high performance and reliable German-Engineered fan/motors. Factory sealed and dynamically balanced, these motors are maintenance free for many years. The backward inclined motor blades offer a high air flow efficiency. The fan/motors are also permanently lubricated and have a very low energy consumption – 65 Watts Maximum (like a light bulb). Purahome really likes how Greentek has used voltage variation for the speed control of both fan motors in order to balance the HRV system.

7. ISF Collar System – A Better and Quicker Installation

ISF stands for “Insert, Slide and Fix”. Our installers love this
revolutionary Collar System and yours will to. This Exclusive Greentek Collar System enables you to manipulate the duct without being on a ladder and securing it 100% airtight with the Locking Collar. The Collar then slides into place on the Greentek HRV. This eliminates one of the challenges of installing an HRV  - how to properly secure and seal an insulated duct to a metal or plastic HRV port. 

8. Auxilary Connecting Relay – No Additional Interlock Needed and More Options! 

Another feature Purahome really likes that is not available in other HRV is the Interlock Relay. This allows the option to have the Greentek HRV run only when the furnace fan is running. To do this with other HRVs requires about $120 in additional parts and labour! It is already included in the Greetek HRV for less money!!

9. Proportional Defrost – Another Patent Pending Energy Saving Feature!
 

An exclusive Greentek GREEN feature, when the HRV needs to defrost the core, the amount of energy used is relative to the outside temperature! Other HRVs will defrost their cores with a maximum use of energy to ensure a complete defrost. Greentek on the other hand, essentially increases the motor speed only when outdoor temperatures drop to provide increased defrost capacity. In other words, on days that are not as cold like -5° C, the defrost mode will function at low speed (unlike other HRVs!) This unique GREEN Greentek technology reduces energy usage by eliminating unnecessary defrost during milder days and offers a more silent operation.

10. Intelligent Design – Easy Access, Easy To Clean, Easy to Operate!
 

Purahome can tell (and we did find out) that Greentek HRVs are the result of Engineering design based on knowing the shortcomings of all other HRVs and their installations. The HRV Door opens upward for much easier access to the inside. There is no obstruction around the drain pan for much easier cleaning. The Drain Pan is also sloped to eliminate bacteria-producing stagnant water. The Electronic Controls are simple for easy operation. The “ISF” (Insert, Slide and Fix) Collar System and the “SPM” (Single Person Mount) Attachment System all make Greentek HRVs easier to install than competitive HRV brands and in less time.

With this in mind, only Greentek HRVs include a built-in Interlock Relay that shuts the HRV off when the furnace fan is not running.

What we are not excited about:

• Purahome is hard pressed to find anything here! As previously mentioned, we believed (and later found that we were right) that Greentek HRVs are the result of an engineering think-tank with the desire to eliminate all short-comings found in competitive systems.

Warranty: 10 years Limited (5 years 100% and 5 more years Pro-rated) on the fan motors, Lifetime on the HRV Core and 5 Years on all other components. Only the Space-Saving Series has a 5 Year Warranty on the fan/motor (even thought it is the same German fan/motor) and hence the lower price.
