What is a Disinfectant?

The term "Disinfectant" is actually a legal, regulated term and cannot be used, or claimed on a product's label, until Health Canada reviews all the supporting efficacy, chemistry and safety data, approves every word on the label and registers the product with a DIN (Drug Identification Number).
Your Benefect is classified as a Hospital or Medical Disinfectant and Fungicide by Health Canada because of the variety of organisms that it kills. Health Canada has selected 4 representative organisms that a product must have Efficacy against, within 10 minutes, using a specifically approved laboratory method, to be successfully registered in these categories.

Health Canada's mandate is responsible for evaluating and monitoring the safety, effectiveness and quality of pharmaceutical drugs and other therapeutic products available to Canadians. So, in addition to kill data, Health Canada scientists have reviewed the Toxicity or safety profile of Benefect, the Directions for Use, Storage, Disposal and Handling, plus a complete review of any Environmental impact.
Health Canada then requires any Precautionary Statements or Warnings to be added to the label to ensure that safe and effective use of the product can be achieved when label directions are followed. The product is then "registered" with a DIN number and can now legally be called a "Disinfectant" or claim to "kill bacteria". So the Benefect label is actually a legal reference point for all health claim and use related questions.

Only products with DIN's can make public health claims such as "Disinfection", "fungicide", "sanitize" or "kills germs". If a product does not have a DIN number then the government has not reviewed and approved the label claims. It therefore should only be relied on for cleaning, not killing germs.
