Purahome is very pleased with (now a 3rd Generation Model, we have installed the previous generations and they were all good) the newly redesigned Epurair HRV 95. A tour of the Epurair manufacturing facility revealed hi-tech laser equipment for precision metal-cutting, very different than many manufacturers who rely on fold and rivet construction. The new design incorporates much thought that has helped eliminate many of the shortcomings of competitive HRVs.

After many diverse installations, our testing revealed:

• Electronic balancing of fan speeds (fresh air in and stale air out) results in quieter, smooth ventilation
• every single installation to date has significantly improved our customers’ air quality
• customers were getting exciting results in real-time, real-world testing situations at work and home

Because of a large focus on energy conservation in the early 1980’s, new building codes were implemented in order to reduce energy consumption, The new codes called for higher insulated values. As a result, new homes, buildings, additions and even remodeling projects are being built far more airtight than they used to be.

People started complaining of headaches, nausea, fatigue and dizziness in the workplace. By the 1990’s people were experiencing similar symptoms in their own newly built homes. This is when the term “Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)” was developed. 

Improved design that includes better insulation has significantly reduced drafts and energy consumption for heating resulted in building a “tight” home to today's standards with reduced overall heat loss by 25 to 50%. This is great for saving money and energy but downright dangerous for our health! This is why every November is Purahome’s busiest month of the year – an air tight home becomes very apparent when a furnace starts to run. One of the most critical and underestimated aspects of newer buildings and homes is ventilation control.

The ventilation rate of a traditionally older drafty home is determined by a few things. For example, the colder and windier it gets, the better ventilated your home is. In drafty old homes, this process occurs naturally, as untreated air is drawn in. If your home, however, is airtight because it was built within the last 15 years or so, (read this section twice as it is scary), it can take as long as 10 hours for one air exchange!  Compare this to a recommended ventilation of one air exchange every three hours  or so to alleviate “Sick Building Syndrome”. Oxygen consumed is not being replaced and VOC gases accumulate in your indoor space.

For people who want the cleanest air as free from gases, odours and humidity (in the winter) as possible especially where tight quarts are present for installation, we highly recommend the Epurair HRV 95 Heat Recovery Ventilator.  Individuals sensitized to airborne gases such as formaldehyde, benzene and other VOCs that off-gas will drastically reduce indoor exposure to these gases by using an Epurair HRV.

NOTE – In this job for Dan Grabowski Denture Clinic, we created a negative pressure in tha back of the clinic where the chemicals are mixed and dentures grinded. We also created a positive pressure in the front area waiting room with fresh air from the Epurair HRV 95 to help prevent any odours infiltrating to the front. We also installed an Abatement CAP 600 HEPA to lower the particulate in the entire space.

Did You Know?

According to the CMHC in Canada, approximately 90% of installed HRVs are not balanced and not maintained! Purahome has to agree with this finding. We have been into many homes with an existing HRV to provide healthier air and when we quiz the homeowner about it, they do not typically know how it works and what to do for maintenance. You’re your Epurair HRV 95, air flow gets balanced by simply adjusting the fan/motor speed for intake and exhaust up to plus/minus 10%. In many cases, this prevents the use of additional mechanical dampers. This makes every Epruair HRV installation more silent and economical. By reducing motor speed to balance the unit you are reducing the noise that would be produced by balancing dampers. In addition, with this GREEN technology the Epurair HRV will consume less energy than comparable sized HRVs.

It is maintenance-free for up to six months at which time (NO TOOLS REQUIRED) you clean the heat recovery core by simply pulling it out and rinsing it in the laundry tub. Your Epurair HRV 95 is designed with high performance and reliable German-Engineered fan/motors. Factory sealed and dynamically balanced, these motors are maintenance free for many years. The backward inclined motor blades offer a high air flow efficiency. The fan/motors are also permanently lubricated and have a very low energy consumption – 65 Watts Maximum (like a light bulb). Purahome really likes how Epurair has used voltage variation for the speed control of both fan motors in order to  help balance the HRV system.

• Only 1 Dehumidistat Control is available so no options here. We would like to see a little more attractively designed dehumidistat in case it is installed in an upper area of a home.
• For customers that wish to qualify for the EnerGuide rebate, the Epurair HRV would not qualify as it is not HVI certified (NOTE – this certification does not imply anything about performance)

Warranty: 5 years on the fan motors, Lifetime on the HRV Core, 2 Years on the electronic control board, 1 Year on all other components.
