It Starts With Good Science (Literally!) Purahome President Mario Di Franco graduated with an Honors Degree in Chemistry and Physics from Brock University. His thesis research on the analysis of cancer-causing compounds in water helped initiate the concept of a Purification Business that would help people with their health and wellness. “My passions were chemistry and science so the challenge was to develop a business that would allow me to apply science to help improve every day life. The end result, Purahome, is a science-based company that helps people.”
Mario continued in university to obtain a Master’s of Science in Education. “During my years as a Senior Science teacher, I began researching water and air purification seriously in any spare time I could find.” As a teacher, Mario started Purahome on a part-time basis in the evenings with a specialized line of water treatment called Aquaspace, based on NASA research, Purahome’s current best-selling line. “We were storing inventory in my rec-room and my parent’s garage.” With continuous research, Purahome diversified into offering other technologies including those for indoor air quality. “To do air quality testing and demonstrations, all appointments were after school or weekends. I had to drive to Toronto to borrow an air laser particulate meter and then return the meter the next day. Today, it’s a little easier so we really appreciate where we are and we’ll always remember where we came from.”
When asked about the decision to leave 12 years in teaching, Mario pauses and replies, “Purahome is an exciting opportunity with a focus on my passion, science, to help people. We are still in education, only now the classroom is either in people’s homes, workplaces, our physical or e-commerce showroom. These are our new classrooms.”
While Purahome sells air and water purification systems for residential and commercial needs, the company focus is still on education – for customers and employees. Mario further studied to become a Certified Water Specialist, one of only a few in Canada. Purahome shares their knowledge with customers and even does so with manufacturers. Purahome works directly with manufacturers to improve product design in addition to developing training sessions for new retailers and dealers. “We have some ideas for the future to further enhance our air and water purification products. We also believe we will be able to patent an idea or so.”
Existing customers are the beneficiaries of Purahome’s desire and ability to help eliminate health challenges and odours in the home and workplace. “Aside from the immediate health benefits, we believe people live longer with purified air and water.” With his extensive chemistry background, and a network of health and wellness practitioners focused in the Niagara Region, Purahome knows which contaminants are harmful and understands the principles for their effective removal. “It’s not one system will do for every need. You have to have a variety of technologies and products to offer the right solution that will meet people’s individual needs.” Unlike many retailers, at Purahome, it clearly is not one system or size does all. Purahome matches the appropriate technologies to customer needs and calculates the appropriate filtration, flow or ventilation rates to size systems properly for every installation.
